2018: Looking ahead, goals, dreams

Wow! What a crazy year 2017 has been.

Last week, I shared about some of the things I’ve learned and done over this past year and now I want to look ahead at 2018.

This past year was mostly about learning, figuring out what I want to do, coming up with a plan, and sort of executing it. I believe I achieved moderate success of the goals I had, but now it’s time to look ahead and see what I want to get done this year.

Interestingly, I just listening to a podcast, Lead to Win, and I’m pretty sure it was their planning your year episode. They talked about some research that indicates that if you share your goals, you’re actually LESS likely to achieve them because the act of saying them out loud tricks your brain into acknowledging more accomplishment than is actually there. I thought that was interesting, so I think I’m not going to bare my entire writing soul here.

All that said, I DO want to look ahead and set some goals for myself.

  1. I want to finish editing book 1 of my fantasy novel, currently called Tamerna. I had a goal of editing 55 pages this month and I’m still 33 pages from my goal, though I’ve added 8 pages in the meantime. I still have a few days, so I’m going to keep driving toward that goal.
  2. I’m working on a poetry project here and there, so I’d like to come up with a more concrete plan for this project and then maybe start working on the first few steps.
  3. Contests – I want to participate in some writing contests or figure out how to submit to magazines, etc. I want to set a goal of 1 submission per month right now, while I figure out the process, and then maybe up that in the future. For now, I’ll just go with that, so no more than 12 submissions next year (if I stick with once per month). This could be short story contests, magazine submissions, or poetry contests. Whatever I can do that gets me to write.
  4. USE my planner effectively to reach the goals I have with writing and other aspects of my life. I bough a nice daily and weekly planner and so I’d like to use it to help me plan out concrete steps to my goals and to keep me on track. I can also use that to keep track of various contests I learned about this year so I can possibly submit next year.

There, I think that’s good enough for now. This writing journey has been SO MUCH FUN so far, but I know that’s mostly hard. It’s mostly hard work, alone, trying to create while still keeping our fingers on the pulse of life. Or, in other case, fighting to breathe while life tries to drag you under the surface so that you never have the time or energy to write.

I’m passionate about this, though, and the process moving ahead. I want to learn more. I want to become an even bette writer. I want to be published. Ultimately, that’s the goal of this venture – to be published. To write. To get paid when people buy my products. To help enrich or improve the lives of other people. Lofty and ethereal goals perhaps, but I have to keep the big picture out there with the reminder of who I am and what I’m doing.

How about you? What are your goals? How are you trying to reach them?

  1. I have decided that 2018 is going to be my year but I am going to sit down by myself and with my other half to see what I really want and how to make it all com true. Still have a couple of days to do that.
