Well, people, I’m nearly there. Just a few more words to go and then I will be a three-time consecutive NaNo winner.
This year, NaNo has really pushed me and in all the best ways.
I got a start on the actual book 2 of Tamerna. I’m over 100 pages in and nearly 25k words. I got stopped by a worldbuilding roadblock. I literally cannot continue without doing some serious worldbuilding with the Travas race and a group of them gathered together. I’m happy with the progress and some of the development. It’s still first draft garbage writing, but garbage writing can be edited. A blank page cannot.
I created an entirely new series of stories featuring two young girls as they try to figure out life with disabilities and allergies and doing that all before starting preschool. I never imagined I’d venture in such a direction, but the story came to life so vividly one night at work that I could do nothing but try to write some of it down. The ONE person who has read it loves it, but can I really blame her? After all, her child is the inspiration for one of the characters.
Finally, I wrote new sections in my Allyandrah and Kru’Nah story, which I’ve been TRYING to do for weeks now with absolutely no success. It took getting stuck in my other two projects to finally make a break through there, and to be totally honest, I’m REALLY happy with what I’ve done with it. It feels exciting to me (hopefully to the readers as well) and I’ve got the new sections scheduled to post every OTHER week now, hopefully to give me a little more lead time on the following sections. I’m hoping to ride this wave of motivation and actually finish out the story. It’s starting to feel like I’m reaching the climax and that all the threads I’ve been weaving around are going to come together in a brilliant fireworks display (at least that’s the hope). Or maybe things will go differently. I’m not sure. I’m down to only 3 prompts left to choose from, so I’m going to have to go in search of prompts again to finish out the story.
So those have been my NaNo projects this year and I’m delighted with how far I’ve come in them, the quality of first draft writing is improving, I think. I’m really fleshing out worlds and ideas, I’m pushing myself and my abilities, my creativity, my boundaries, and challenging my own ideas of constraints.
On top of it all, I’ve managed to bake some REALLY delicious bread this week, too, so I can’t really complain there.
All in all, I ADORE NaNo, even as hard as it is and even as many roadblocks as I encounter while trying to reach that magic number of 50k (and then wondering how far OVER the 50k I need to go just to make sure that when I go to verify, it’s ACTUALLY over 50k.
Thanks for coming along with me in this journey. I’ve got just a few more words to go, but I’m not sure I’ll push for it tonight. I’m going to enjoy my first Wednesday evening not working in over a year by watching some Great British Baking Show, and maybe even making myself a little popcorn snack.
It’s important to celebrate the little things. I got some words in tonight, scheduled the 4th installment of Allyandrah and Kru’Nah that I’ve written this week, and I have a free evening. These are all beautiful things and I’m just going to enjoy the moment and not push too hard to get the final words in. They will come.
And really, I still have two days to finish it all. And I know I will, but don’t count on an update about that. You’ll be able to find THAT on my facebook page when the time comes. And I hope you’ll join me over there. I’d love to see you.
