Book Review: The Realms of the Gods by Tamora Pierce (Book 4 of The Immortals)

What this book is about:

Daine and Numair are closing in on the final chapter of quest to save Tortall from the hands of the Carthaki empire. The immortals are bigger, badder, and in more places than ever before.

What I liked:

A beautiful little surprise tucked away at the end that had me cheering, especially because I was SO blind sided by it. Looking back, I shouldn’t have been, but I was and I absolutely loved it.

Other than that tantalizing detail, the action was good, characters delightful, and spot on pacing, The story is nearly perfectly written, as I think I say of Tamora Pierce all the time. There’s a reason she’s as popular as she is. She writes well and produces stories that pull me in.

What I didn’t like:

I can’t think of anything that turned me off the book. Perhaps the ending tied up a bit TOO neatly, but really, that’s to be expected from YA I think. I think I would have preferred a bit more struggle in the resolution, but as a resolution to a series, there were a number of threads to tie up all at once.

Overall thoughts and opinions:

I’m so glad I was put onto these books way back when and that I’ve finally finished them! Of course, there are SO MANY MORE Tortall books out there and I plan to read every single one from my local library. I actually just grabbed a couple more at my last “We’re only returning, I’m not going to pick out anything” library stop (what silliness is that anyway???)

I am a bit sad that this series is over, but I can’t wait to dig into others and learn more and more about this world and these characters. These are books I can definitely see reading again and wanting my kids to read! I better get on being a best-seller myself to afford this personal library I want!

The Immortals series is worth the read, and was entirely enjoyable from the first to the last. I highly recommend them all. Five stars!
